DD-DIGPROD-ADR-0002: Devonside Labs Mark Reuses the Devonshire "D" Glyph Geometry¶
Status¶
approved — decided by the Founder on 2026-07-16, in the course of directing the creation of a
first candidate Devonside Labs mark, and formally ratified by the Founder on 2026-07-17 alongside
approval of the resulting "B3" mark itself (see
ventures/digital-products/docs/brand-assets.md). The substance of the decision (reuse the exact
geometry) was the Founder's own explicit instruction; this record documents it, it does not
originate it.
Date¶
2026-07-16
Context¶
docs/company/brand-architecture.md establishes
an independent-by-default brand architecture: each venture's visual identity is, by default,
"unrelated in look and feel to the parent company," and any parent-company visual/naming
endorsement is meant to be "a venture-level decision, made deliberately — not a default."
While directing work on a first candidate Devonside Labs mark, the Founder supplied a reference
image and construction instructions that explicitly require the new mark to preserve the approved
Devonshire Digital LLC "D" glyph path (brand/company/source/d-mark.svg) byte-for-byte —
coordinates, proportions, Bézier curves, and thickness unchanged — as the base shape, with only the
surrounding decorative field (squares, for Devonshire; rounded "data stream" bars and dots, for
Devonside Labs) differing between the two marks. This is a deliberate departure from the
independent-by-default model, and brand-architecture.md requires that departure to be recorded
as an explicit, documented decision rather than left implicit.
Decision¶
Devonside Labs' mark intentionally shares its "D" glyph geometry with the Devonshire Digital LLC "D" mark, byte-for-byte. This is a family-resemblance / hybrid visual relationship between the parent company's mark and this venture's mark, chosen deliberately, not a default or an oversight.
This decision is scoped narrowly:
- It applies only to the "D" glyph path itself (the curved band shape). It does not make
Devonside Labs a naming or visual umbrella extension of Devonshire Digital LLC — the prohibition
in
brand-architecture.mdon "Devonshire Digital Labs" / "DDLabs" as an umbrella brand is unaffected, and the two brand names remain distinct perDD-DIGPROD-ADR-0001/ company ADR-0009. - It does not decide Devonside Labs' color palette or any other visual-identity element beyond
the mark geometry and (per the 2026-07-17 amendment below) wordmark typeface — those remain open
(see
docs/company/brand-assets.md, "Still open"). - It does not commit any future "Devonside ___"-prefixed venture (per OQ-016) to the same visual reuse; per ADR-0005, each such venture still makes its own independent brand-architecture decision.
Consequences¶
- Benefit: gives the Devonshire Digital LLC portfolio a recognizable, deliberate visual thread (the "D" glyph as a shared geometric motif) across at least one venture, echoing the already-documented intentional phonetic closeness of "Devonside" to "Devonshire" (ADR-0009).
- Cost: narrows Devonside Labs' visual independence from the parent company at the mark level, which is a hard-to-reverse choice once the mark ships in customer-facing contexts (packaging, marketplace listings) — reversing it later means a full re-brand of the mark, not just an update.
- Cost: increases the risk of visual confusion between "Devonshire Digital" and "Devonside Labs" if the surrounding field (squares vs. data-stream bars) and colorway are not kept clearly differentiated in practice — this makes the surrounding-field design choice (not just the D glyph) load-bearing for keeping the two brands visually distinguishable.
- This mark remains a candidate, not approved for use, independent of this ADR's own status —
see
ventures/digital-products/docs/brand-assets.md.
Alternatives Considered¶
- Fully independent Devonside Labs mark (default model): design a new, unrelated glyph. Not chosen — the Founder specifically directed reuse of the approved "D" path as the base for this candidate.
- Reuse the D glyph but recolor/reshape it enough to read as distinct: rejected by the Founder's explicit "byte-for-byte" instruction, which leaves no room for reshaping the glyph itself; differentiation is carried entirely by the surrounding field and colorway instead.
Amendment (2026-07-17): shared wordmark typeface¶
Extending the same family-resemblance logic above from the mark's glyph geometry to typography:
Devonshire Digital LLC and Devonside Labs wordmark lockups both use Montserrat Medium (the
typeface already selected for Devonshire Digital LLC, per docs/company/brand-assets.md's
Typography section, 2026-07-11). This was the Founder's explicit instruction while directing the
wordmark lockup work ("I want to use the same typography across both... same typeface family is
enough"), given in the same session that produced the four approved lockup files below.
This amendment is scoped the same narrow way as the geometry-sharing decision above:
- It applies only to the typeface family used in the wordmark lockups. It does not merge the two brands' visual identities more broadly, and does not decide color palette or any other visual-identity element.
- Differentiation between the two brands' lockups is carried by the same mechanism as the mark itself: the surrounding field (pixelation squares vs. data-stream bars/dots) and, per the Founder's explicit direction, is not additionally reinforced through the typography itself ("I wouldn't worry about differentiation too much... squares vs. streams should be enough").
Four production wordmark lockup files were built to match the Founder's selected treatment from that review (per brand/orientation, chosen from a live interactive comparison, not guessed):
| Brand | Orientation | Treatment | Files |
|---|---|---|---|
| Devonshire Digital LLC | Horizontal | Two-line, left-aligned ("DEVONSHIRE" / "DIGITAL LLC") | brand/company/source/d-mark-lockup-horizontal.svg, brand/company/exports/d-mark-lockup-horizontal-{navy,white}.svg |
| Devonshire Digital LLC | Stacked | Two-line, justified | brand/company/source/d-mark-lockup-stacked.svg, brand/company/exports/d-mark-lockup-stacked-{navy,white}.svg |
| Devonside Labs | Horizontal | Single line ("DEVONSIDE LABS") | brand/ventures/digital-products/source/b3-mark-lockup-horizontal.svg, .../exports/b3-mark-lockup-horizontal-{navy,white}.svg |
| Devonside Labs | Stacked | Single line | brand/ventures/digital-products/source/b3-mark-lockup-stacked.svg, .../exports/b3-mark-lockup-stacked-{navy,white}.svg |
All four are ALL CAPS, +4% tracking, Montserrat Medium glyphs outlined to vector paths (no live
font dependency — matching the standalone marks' own convention). Approved by the Founder,
2026-07-17, after confirming the rendered vector output matched the interactive review used to
select the treatment. See docs/company/brand-assets.md and
ventures/digital-products/docs/brand-assets.md for the formal asset-register entries.
Follow-up Actions¶
- ~~Founder review/ratification of this ADR (move
statustoapprovedor reject/revise).~~ Done 2026-07-17. - ~~Founder approval of the resulting candidate mark itself, tracked separately in
ventures/digital-products/docs/brand-assets.md.~~ Done 2026-07-17. - ~~Decide whether Devonside Labs shares Devonshire Digital LLC's wordmark typeface.~~ Done 2026-07-17 — see Amendment above.
- If a future "Devonside ___" venture is ever created, its own brand-architecture decision should explicitly state whether it also reuses this geometry (and now, typeface) or not — silence should not be read as inheriting this decision.
